Edible Islington is a council lead initiative to get Islington growing more & better quality food. Information of grants available through Edible Islington to support community food growing and details of food growing workshops can be found on their website.
The Green Living Centre offers free advice on what food is in season, where you can buy it and what you can do with it. They also have a series of seasonal food recipes.
Islington Organic Growers Network was started by a group of local residents to support people in learning about organic gardening and growing. The Network organises a Grow Your Own Food scheme, beginner workshops and an annual horticultural show. The group is hosted by the Green Living Centre and meets regularly. Membership is free.
The Ecology Centre is the base for Islington's Nature Conservation Team, who manage the boroughs local nature reserves, run events, courses and workshops. They also run an environmental education program for schools and provide advice on all aspects of nature conservation. The team also run a conservation volunteer group for adults. The Ecology Centre is available to hire for meetings and training events during the week and private hires at weekends.
It's a fantastic enterprise: in addition to providing fresh, seasonal vegetables, Growing Communities is also a neighbourhood focal point: cookery demos, the farmers' market, lessons in how to grow veg and the community spirit generated by belonging to the scheme are just some of its benefits. The fact that [Julie Brown] has also created jobs in a tough market gives real meaning to that much over-used word "sustainability"
Islington in Bloom is a council lead initiative to make our borough a more attractive place to live and work. There is something for everyone in Islington in Bloom, including prizes!
